Captial control, not tax evasion
[edit]The previous version said Keith Stewart's sister and brother-in-law had smuggled their fortune out of England "to avoid taxes". This is wrong, and it's an important plot point-- at that time, it was illegal to transfer large amounts of capital out of the country, and the book implies that this is a more serious crime than tax evasion. Stewart is afraid that the authorities in Tahiti will sieze the entire fortune if they find out his true reason for being there. Therefore, he must smuggle it back to England without anyone finding out about it. -Rbean 22:52, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks. I (obviously) never did quite understand that myself. Dpbsmith (talk) 21:53, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
Category English books or Australian books
[edit]I have deleted the category "English books". Shute had emigrated to Australia for the final years of his life, and since this novel was published posthumously, it was probably written there. Granted, it has an English setting for the first and final parts of the novel. However, I cannot be sure Shute had taken out Australian citizenship at the time of writing (if he ever did) so I'm reluctant to recatagorize as Australian books.--Wehwalt 13:50, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
